CHARLTON — Selectmen opted to put police and fire requests for new staff on the October Special Town Meeting warrant despite some members' objections they didn't know where the money was coming from.

Others, and the chiefs themselves, noted the new hires would essentially pay for themselves by making the continued use of overtime unnecessary, for the most part.

"I honestly believe both chiefs would be derelict in their duties if they saw or felt a need in their departments and didn't bring it forward," Selectman Kathleen Walker said Tuesday, Sept. 18, praising them for their "determination and will to bring it forward."
